Cloth vs. Disposable

I've had enough of the disposable diapers, even the Seventh Generation ones! Sequoia is only one of many babies (but she is MY baby), yet her ecological footprint has already outsized that of Godzilla. In the first two weeks of life, Sequoia has managed to add approx. (14 diapers X 14 days) to landfills, most of which are found in underresourced neighborhoods in the U.S. That's a big burden that Sequoia must carry so early in life. Besides, one wet diaper weights about 10 pounds; or at least that's what it sounds like when it lands in the bottom of the garbage bag hanging from my bedroom door. I just can't do it anymore! Besides, the disposables never seem to contain the baby pee, nor the baby poo, inside the actual diaper; instead, I change a baby outfit each time I change a soiled diaper, which only adds to her ecological footprint when I run yet another load of wash. Plus, I tend to procrastinate on changing another wet diaper when I know that whatever is found in the disposable wicks away the pee from Sequoia's soft baby skin. (okay, it's not that bad) So a few days ago, we switched over to the 100 percent cotton Chinese pre-fold diapers. And already I just feel better... more all-natural... more organic... more crunchy... even more in tune to my baby's calls. I actually LIKE changing her when the diaper is cloth... because again, it just makes me *feel* better (like all warm and fuzzy inside). Besides, wouldn't you feel the same if you got to see this image each and every time you changed your baby's diaper:

  2. I have a solution to your eco- quandary!

For every pee, plant a tree!
For every poo, why not plant two!

When stuck between two undesirable choices, I say, "Always chose the third!"
